SCORES student-athletes have improved academic outcomes. They are likely to: • attend school more frequently and do better on English Language tests. • write and perform poetry, be more physically active. O have a greater sense of connection to the school and the larger community. O have greater involvement of parents and guardians. For girls who participate in SCORES, participants are likely to have: increased self-confidence, improved body image, reduced risk of obesity. America SCORES Bay Area offers year-round programs that combine academic enrichment and soccer practices and weekly game day events. America SCORES teams have a soccer coach and a writing coach, or 1 coach who leads both aspects of the program. America SCORES provides in depth on-site support through our regional program staff who are experts in youth development, soccer, creative writing, and service-learning. More specifically, America SCORES helps afterschool programs create and sustain vibrant SCORES teams by providing: O Soccer, Literacy, Poetry, and Service Learning curricula O Regular site visits by program staff for student recruitment, problem solving and program quality evaluation. O Coach training and one-on-one support. O Soccer uniforms and equipment, writing journals and supplies. O Weekly soccer game day events. O Annual events: Soccer Tournaments, Fall Poetry Slam, and Spring SCORES Amplify Service-Learning Celebration. PARTICIPANTS Each team will consist of 12-17 students per team and each participant is required to complete an America SCORES registration form to participate in all activities. The school or host agency provides: O Site coordinator to be the point of contact for America SCORES coaches and staff. Site Coordinator will support and oversee the program and ensure its success. • A consistent, dedicated team of 12-17 students. O Space for practice on school yard I classroom space for poetry workshops. Minimum time commitment required per week for SCORES teams: O America SCORES for 2nd - 3rd graders - one hour of poetry workshops, one hour of soccer practices, and 1 .5 hours for game days).
