Considerable discussion was had concerning whether or not the building at 35 Hudson Street
<br />was being used as a convalescent home. The City Health Officer reported he had visited
<br />the building and his examination showed no evidence of its being used for a hospital
<br />or a similar institution. Some of the neighbors, however, complained that to their
<br />knowledge it was being so used. Consequently, Councilman Pletcher, seconded by
<br />Councilman Eva, and carried, proposed that the Clerk be instructed to issue subpoena
<br />to the owner and occupant of the house, to the real estate agent who sold the property
<br />to the present owner, and to Peter.Klitsch, a plumber, who had done work on the
<br />premises,.wi.th a special hearing for this purpose set at an adjourned meeting next
<br />Monday, March 22, at 8 o'clock p.m.
<br />After filing Affidavit of Publication, Ordinance No. 391, calling a special election for the
<br />purpose of voting, on certain Harbor land annexation, on motion of Councilman Christensen,
<br />seconded by Councilman Eva, was adopted unanimously.
<br />Harry Hoefler requested permission to subdivide Lot 5, Block 4, Oak Knoll Manor, into three
<br />lots. He was referred to the Planning Commission.
<br />Because of the widening of E1 Camino Real, Mrs. Chapman, owner of bungalow office building,
<br />on west side of Highway between Broadway and Brewster Avenue, told the Council that
<br />the front part of the building would have to be removed to allow for the necessary
<br />space, and asked permission to put a business front on what was left of the building
<br />in order to utilize it. Accordingly, on motion of Councilman Eva, seconded by Cour-
<br />cilman McNulty, the Building•Inspector was authorized to give such a permit.
<br />Resolution 1937-2, declaring that weeds a public nuisance and that they be abated was unani-
<br />mously passed, on motion of Councilman Pletcher, seconded by Councilman Christensen.
<br />Sufficient time having elapsed since the ratification by the State Legislature of an
<br />Amendment to the City Charter concerning the qualifications of the City Manager,
<br />Councilman Jones, seconded by Councilman Eva, proposed that the Council appoint the
<br />present Acting City Manager, Chas. L. Dimmitt, City Manager: Unanimously carried.
<br />Kirkbride and Wilson, Attorneys in San Mateq;presented bill for $250 for services in drafting
<br />Brief in the proceedings for the validating of the Harbor Bond Issue. On motion of
<br />Councilman Eva, seconded by Councilman McNulty, the Treasurer was authorized to pay the
<br />bill.
<br />Councilman Eva read a report -concerning decision by U. S. Webb, State Attorney General,
<br />about the legality of certain pin ball machines, -which, according to decision, were
<br />illegal. Councilman Eva, seconded by Councilman Christensen, proposed that the Chief
<br />of Police enforce the section of the Penal Code relating to pin ball machines as inter-
<br />preted by Webb, effective as of April 1. However, there was some opposition to this,
<br />and Councilman Jones, seconded by Councilman Pletcher, moved that the previous motion
<br />be laid on the table, which motion carried with Councilmen Eva and Christensen and
<br />Mayor McCarthy voting "No". The Clerk was asked to bring the matter up again at the
<br />second meeting in April.
<br />With the concurrence of the Council, Mayor McCarthy appointed 0. K. Whittenburg to serve on
<br />the Board of Library Trustees for the unexpired term of John Gill.
