1
MINUTES OF REGULAR MEETING
REDWOOD CITY COUNCIL
OCTOBER 2, 1933
9:00 P.M.
Upon roll call, the following Councilmen were present: Mayor, W. J. Dusel, H. A. Beeger, C. J.
Hildebrant, R. N. Jones, C. G. Lambert, Paul A. McCarthy, Geo. W. McNulty, .City Clerk,
B. E. Myers. Absent: None.
The minutes of the meeting of September 19 were approved on motion of Councilman Lambert, as—
conded by Councilman McCarthy.
Chas. F. Frey, representing the United Veterans Association, presented a petition to the Council
asking that certain improvements be made in the Veterans Hall at the expense of the city.
The matter was referred to the City Manager for report at the next meeting, on motion of
Councilman Beeger, seconded by Councilman Hildebrant.
Rev. Norman W. Pendleton presented a petition asking that additional tennis courts be provided
by the city. R. E. Savage, Paul Reimer and Elbert Thomas also discussed the need for such
courts. As the cost would be close' to $3,000 per unit, and no provision having been made
for such expenditure, the Council was unable to promise anything during the fiscal year.
The question of further medical examination and treatment for the injured hand of J. B. Shook
was presented to the Council by the City Clerk. It was thought best to have Mr. Mansfield
accompany Mr. Shook to the offices of the Compensation Insurance Fund to take up this
matter personally.
In a letter from the Chamber of Commerce, complaint was made concerning the ugly appearance of
the Southern Pacific property in Redwood City and asked that something be done about it.
The Clerk was instructed to write another'letter to the Southern Pacific concerning it and
the City Manager promised to follow it up personally.
In a second letter from the Chamber of Commerce, comment was made concerning the unsightly con—
dition of some of the business streets and asked that steps be taken to overcome it. It
was suggested at the Council meeting that an officer check up with the merchants along
Broadway between the tracks and the highway toward eliminating this unsightly condition.
The Merchants Division of the Chamber of Commerce extended the Council an invitation to parti—
cipate in the NRA parade Friday evening, October 6. It was decided to have the Mayor, in
a decorated car, represent the Council.
As instructed in the meeting of September 5, the City Attorney filed a written recommendation
concerning the procedure to follow in connection with the request of H. A. Postlethwaite
for something to be done about the unpaid assessments under Resolution of Intention K-12,
improvement of Broadway and Spring Street. He said, 11In my opinion the proper procedure
to take would be for the city to commence an action to foreclose these delinquent assess—
ments."
The Redwood City Sportsmen's Club, in a letter to the city, offered to turn over to the city
certain equipment in the Club House and also included the offer to transfer the owner—
ship of the piano provided the city would pay the $13.00 still due on it. On motion of
Councilman Lambert, seconded by Councilman McNulty, the matter was left up to the dis—
cretion of the City Manager.
43
