area known as Redwood Village be reclassified from no classification to a first 295
residential zone, with the exception of a strip of one lot depth along Middlefield
i
Road, which the Commission recommends be reclassified to business district. Council-
fj man Werder moved the introduction of an ordinance covering the reclassification.
,
j The motion was seconded by Councilman Granger, and carried.
LETTER RECEIVED FROM MRS. SYLVIA LILLIFORS, 610 Bayroad, Redwood City, requesting license
to operate a business for the developing and finishing of photographic film business
s`
to be carried on in the residence. Councilman Granger moved that the matter,be.re-
t ferred to the City Manager, the motion was seconded by Councilman Werder, and carried.
j LETTER FROM ANDREW T. NORRIS was received expressing appreciation for the action taken by
the Council in closing Oak Avenue between Hudson and Eleanor Streets, thereby elimi-
nating the problem of flying dust in summer and mud in winter at the entrance of
Hudson Street. Letter was ordered filed.
k LETTER RECEIVED FROM PETER C. CASAL relative to Interim Ordinance which would affect
building on his property on the south-west corner of Harrison Avenue and Adams Street.
The City Clerk was directed to communicate with Mr. Casal and direct him in the filing
of proper application to the City Council for permit to build the type of building
desired.
C014MUNICATION RECEIVED FROM THE OPTIMIST CLUB OF REDWOOD CITY, OPPOSING authorization by
! the City Council for the location of a temporary National Guard Armory and Training
Center in the Community Park area on the grounds that it would be of no use to the
general public, and that such establishments are prone to stay and expand, becoming
permanent. They suggest that the City purchase land in a suitable location for this
defense organization, rather than use land set aside for the expansion of Park and
Recreation facilities. Councilman Werder offered the opinion that the Council would
not be justified in spending the taxpayers' money for such a purpose. Councilman
Holmquist pointed out that the area in question, where the Armory would be tempor-
arily placed, will not be used by the City of Redwood for 20 years. In his opinion,
the building should be allowed to stand for a period of three years, after which it
should be torn down. The City Clerk was instructed to file the communication.
j COUNCILMAN HOLMQUIST REPORTED ON THE BAYSHORE HIGHWAY TRAFFIC CONTROL meeting which was
attended by representatives of all Peninsula cities. He stated that the excessive
if speed of motorists on the Bayshore was a hazard to re$idents attempting to cross
the highway. These residents are asking the Highway Commission to build a special
f road paralleling the Bayshore Highway for the use of local traffic. Since Redwood
City will have similar problems when the freeway ends here, Councilman Holmquist
recommended that we cooperate with San Mateo, and that we send a representative to
the next meeting of the traffic control committee.
PERRY STREET PARKING LOT condemnation proceedings were discussed after which Councilman
Granger moved that the proper authorities be given authority to secure appraisals at
an expenditure not to exceed the sum of $200.00. It was suggested that the Building
Inspector hold up permits for construction in this area pending outcome of above
s mentioned proceedings. The motion was seconded by Councilman Holmquist, and carried.
MR. T. E. JACKSON requested permission to build dwelling on Lot 4, and garage on Lot 5,
in subdivision which he is developing. Plans to build on all the rest of -the lots
in the tract, three houses having already been completed.
