To the Honorable Mayor and City Council <br /> From the City Manageri <br /> <br /> May 20, 2002 <br /> <br /> Subject <br /> 2000-2001 Tree Preservation and Sidewalk Repair Program <br /> <br /> Recommendation <br /> By Motion, accept improvements for the 2000-2001 Tree Preservation and Sidewalk <br /> Repair Program, and release the retention for L & B Engineering, Inc. <br /> <br /> Background <br /> On February 26, 2001 t~e City Council approved the contract documents and <br /> specifications and authorized the City Clerk to call for bids for the subject contract. The <br /> proposed contract was duly advertised and six sealed bids were received and opened at <br /> the Office of the City Clerk on April 25, 2001. On May 7, 2001 the City Council awarded <br /> the contract to L & B Engineering, Inc. in the amount of $629,900.00. The estimated bid <br /> quantities were established by surveying the project area and compiling the sidewalk and <br /> curb and gutter defects observed, plus wheel chair ramps to be installed in the project <br /> area. The survey quantities are used to set a bid scope for the project. Change Order No. <br /> 1 was approved by Council on January 14, 2002 in the amount of $120,000 increasing the <br /> available contract amount by 19% to $749,000. <br /> <br /> The tree preservation and sidewalk repair program performed repairs at 445 locations for a <br /> total project amgunt of $719,691 14.3% greater than the original contract amount. Fifty- <br /> two wheel chair ramps were constructed and 333 trees were root pruned and retained <br /> during the project. <br /> <br /> L & B Engineering has completed the work to specifications and staff recommends <br /> accepting the improvements. There is a one-year guarantee on the concrete <br /> improvements written into the contract agreement. <br /> <br />Alternatives <br />The only alternative would be not to accept the project and not release the retention. Staff <br />believes that all known requests for punch list items have been corrected.
