Letter from Nancy Wantz of February 27, 1985, requesting
legislation relating to fines for faulty alarms. (301 -07)
There being no objection, Mayor Britschgi invited Mrs. Wantz to present her
communication out of order at this time also.
Nancy and Michael Wantz, 228 Elwood, referred to the subject letter and
reported the support of neighbors regarding the faulty alarm at Sequoia High
School. They suggested fines be imposed on owners of continually faulty
alarms.
Mayor Britschgi reported he had talked to the Principal and to the
maintenance man responsible for the alarm and was told that it is being
repaired and no problem should exist by the end of the week.
City Manager Smith stated for the record that the Police Department does not
respond directly to alarms of private alarm systems, the only response being
when the alarm company reports it to the Department.
Police Chief Guardino said that false alarms are not unusual, particularly
among banks, and he would support making fines or some kind of charge after
three false alarms to encourage owners to repair them.
In response to question, Mrs. Wantz said she had received a letter from the
Principal dated February 7, 1985, stating the alarm was being repaired. She
called attention to ordinances existing in other cities imposing fines for
false alarms and suggested Council consider adoption of such an ordinance.
It was pointed out there are a variety of alarms and church bells in the City
and difficulties may exist in attempting to draft an appropriate ordinance.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - - - - --
REPORTS OF BOARDS, COMMISSIONS AND COMMITTEES
2.
