Item No. 2 (continued)
make the open space property available to all taxpayers of the Mid -
Peninsula Regional Open Space District ( MROSD) regardless of physical
condition. Ms. Swope introduced members of the Commission in the
audience.
Ruth Waters, 1950 Brittan, San Carlos, representative of the Coalition to
Save Hassler and Director of the Twin Pines Center in Belmont, reported
that MROSD opposes use of the buildings and has destroyed part of the
central building and the south wing. Ms. Waters advised that the matter
is in the courts and that the Board of Supervisors is attempting to
preserve the buildings as an arts center in spite of the resistance of
MROSD. She urged that the City Council write to the Board of Supervisors
indicating support and to the MROSD urging cooperation in the matter.
Discussion followed and Ms. Waters replied question and commented
concerning the manner in which a nonprofit corporation might operate the
arts center; the reconstruction needed; the means by which MROSD might
make the buildings available to the County; the fact that taxpayers have
purchased the buildings through contributions to the District which
suggest they ought not to have to purchase it again as taxpayers of the
County; the amount of MROSD funding provided by San Mateo County taxpayers
and the benefits received; and the possibility of working with MROSD to
obtain both open space and the desired arts center.
M /S: Biagi /Mosher to accept the recommendations of the Civic Cultural
Commission and express City Council support to the San Mateo County Board
of Supervisors of their efforts being made on behalf of the San Mateo
County Arts Council in its endeavor to preserve the Hassler Health Home
property buildings for an arts center; and that it be noted that the City
Council has concern about the destruction of buildings which are taxpayer
property.
Carried unanimously by voice vote.
