MINUTE ORDER NO. 84 -46
---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - - - - --
REPORTS OF CITY MANAGER
5. Roosevelt Avenue Reconstruction Project (1101 -01)
(Continued from 2/27/84)
Report of City Manager and Director Public Works 2/21/84
Ralph Nobles, 3720 Country Club Drive, urged that Council keep in mind that
Roosevelt Avenue is a principal thoroughfare in the City with regard to width
and appearance. Mr. Nobles suggested the present width be maintained and
that the planter strips be eliminated with the sidewalk at the curb. He
suggested that the few trees worth saving could be accommodated by jogs in
the sidewalk.
Director of Public Works Addiego replied to questions and commented
concerning what would be involved if the 40 foot width is maintained and an
integrated curb, gutter and sidewalk used. Mr. Addiego also commented
concerning the desirability of undergrounding PG &E lines and doing water,
sewer and storm drain work also, while the street is being reconstructed. He
reported that he is talking with PG &E representatives in an attempt to have
the undergrounding done in 1985 instead of 1986 according to present plans.
M /S: Britschgi /Biagi to instruct staff to proceed with the Roosevelt Avenue
Reconstruction Project as quickly as possible based on maintaining the 40
foot street width.
Carried unanimously by voice vote. MINUTE ORDER NO. 84 -47
Nita Spanqler, 970 Edgewood Road, referred to her request of February 27,
1984, that consideration be given to the use of bicycles on Roosevelt
Avenue.
City Manager Smith and Mr. Addiego explained that bicyclists may use
Roosevelt Avenue in the same manner as other vehicles in accordance with
State law. A separate lane for bicycles on each side of the 40 foot street
cannot be accommodated unless the much - needed on- street parking is
eliminated. It was suggested that bike lanes might be established on wider,
less used nearby streets.
Council members indicated an interest in Mr. Smith's suggestion that it might
be appropriate at this time to review the Bikeways Plan on which the Public
Works Department has spent considerable time a few years ago.
(Memo 3/8/84)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - - - - --
Reg.
