Item No. 1 (continued)
Southern Pacific, with 26 stations between San Francisco and San Jose. He
reported that the 5 -year Capital Improvement Program of CalTrain provides
for new equipment, including new locomotives, new maintenance facilities
and station improvements. Additional improvements planned are a central-
ized train control, electrification of the system, and separation of
rail /highway grade crossings, and the planned improvements are expected to
allow express train capability. He also described proposals for a new San
Jose terminal, as well as for San Francisco which is expected to provide
more convenient access to feeder transportation; i.e. trans -bay tube, bus
lines, and the like.
Discussion followed, and Mr. Crockett commented and replied to questions
by Council, that he recognized the need to replace the temporary trailer
serving as a depot for Redwood City; that he hoped that an adequate
interim terminal can be worked out for the City, that the City is on the
list for early right of way acquisition.
City Manager Smith noted that the City has had applications pending with
the State for some years for a proposed multi -modal facility, and the
point has been reached where decisions have to be made. Director of
Public Works Addiego reported that in a meeting the previous week with
representatives of SamTrans and CalTrans, they were informed of the City's
concern regarding funds for a transportation terminal and the response
seemed to be encouraging. He also expressed concern that improvements
proposed at each end of the corridor will make it imperative that improve-
ments also be made in between, since the increased rail activity will
result in an increase in traffic congestion and delays at rail crossing
because all crossings in Redwood City are at grade.
Jon Williamson, 2575 Middlefield Road, inquired about average ridership
costs per person.
Vice Mayor Britschgi noted that the Council's Legislative Committee has
taken a position supporting the extension to downtown San Francisco, and
that Mayor Stangel had advised CalTrans by letter of that support, so no
further action is required by Council.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - - - - --
2.
