?~- Z

INTERESTED IN SERVING ON THE LEAGUE

BOARD OF DIRECTORS?
The League of California Cities welcomes
nominations from elected officials interested in
serving in five at-large positions (two-year term),
or Second Vice President (one-year term). All
nominees for Second Vice President must have
previously served on the Board of Directors.

If you are interested in submitting your name
(or another elected official's name) for nomination
to the League Board of Directors, please provide
the information requested on the Nomination Form,
along with a bio and letter requesting consider-
ation, to the League's Sacramento headquarters
on or before end of business on Friday, July 8,
2005. Nomination materials can be found on the
League's Website at www.cacities.ora in the board
of directors section or can be obtained by contact-
ing League Staff Mimi Sharpe at 916/658-8232 or
sharpem@cacities.ora.

LOOKING FOR CALIFORNIA'S BEST TO

FILL A POSITION IN YOUR CITY?

Western City Magazine's job opportunity
section is the source for job seekers looking
for positions in local government. According
to our reader survey, the job opportunity
section is the best read section of our
magazine!

When you place an ad in Western City
Magazine, it will be posted at no additional
charge on our website, which receives over
80,000 hits per month.

Call to place your recruitment ad today!
We Have What you Need
800-262-1801 or visit our website
www.westerncity.com

AB 260 from page 1 ................

As written, and as stated in the author's
original background documents, the intent of this
bill is to compare the response times and staffing
levels of each reporting fire department with the
standard found in NFPA 1710, the Standard for the
Deployment of Fire Suppression Operations,
Emergency Medical Operations, and Special
Operations to the Public by Career Fire Depart-
ments, a voluntary standard produced by the
National Fire Protection Association.

While the League agrees it is important for
local governments to develop performance objec-
tives, benchmarks and evaluations, the League is
opposed to the comparison of fire department
data to the controversial NFPA 1710 standard,
which proposes a "one-size-fits-all" approach that
is opposed by most local jurisdictions in California.

AB 260 is substantially similar to AB 2406
(Bermudez) from the 2004 Legislative session.
AB 2406 was opposed by the League and subse-
quently vetoed by Governor Schwarzenegger. In
his veto message, the Governor stated, "Fire
protection service standards are directly depen-
dent on the local decision-making process. Local
agencies are in the best position to evaluate their
conditions to match community needs with avail-
able resources"

A sample opposition letter is available in the
online League's Advocacy Center
(www.cacities.ora/advocacycenter) where you
can also locate your local assembly member.

Please fax a letter to the ASSSEMBLY
COMMITTEE ON GOVERNMENTAL ORGANI-
ZATION, ATTN: Chris Lindstrom and Katey
O'Malley (Fax: 916-319-3979), to express your
opposition to this bill ASAP! Don't forget to CC:
Assembly Member Rudy Bermudez (Fax: 916-
319-2156), Peter Renevitz, G.O. Consultant,
Assembly Republican Caucus (Fax: 916-319-
3902), the League (Fax: 916-658-8240) and also
your local assembly member.

PAGE 2/PRIORITY FOCUS

Visit the League's Official Web Site--www.cacities.org
