5. SPECIAL ORDERS OF THE DAY <br />A. Acknowledgement of the winning poets of the First Annual Redwood City Youth <br />Poetry Contest <br />• Yarelly Contreras, Hugo Vasquez, Maria Ruiz, Nataly Villalobos, Josue <br />Hernandez, Fernando Sanchez, Mackenzie Person, Risa Jensen, Cynthia <br />Orocio Ruiz, Ricky Martinez, Tevye Friedlander, Andrew Duncan, <br />Samantha Schutzer, Michele Aranyos, Morningstar Bazan, Mika Rosen, <br />and Alyra Slocum <br />Mayor Ira introduced and congratulated the winners of the First Annual <br />Redwood City Youth Poetry Contest. A total of 650 students from age 5 -18 <br />submitted poems that were judged by three published poets from Montalvo <br />Arts Center. The 15 finalists were selected to read their poems on April 2 <br />and all received trophies and certificates to local businesses. Five were <br />chosen as Grand Winners and were presented with trophies and $100 gift <br />certificates to a local bookstore. The poems were on display in the City <br />Hall lobby area outside the Council Chamber. <br />B. Proclamation in honor of National Historic Preservation Month <br />Historic Resources Advisory Committee Chairperson Ken Rolandelli announced <br />activities planned for Redwood City during Preservation Month 2005. The historic <br />walking tour which takes place on Saturday, May 7, begins at 10:30 a.m. in front <br />of the Lathrop House at 627 Hamilton Street. A field trip for 7th graders from the <br />Redwood City School District of three downtown buildings listed on the National <br />Register of Historic Places takes place on May 23, 24, 25 and 27. A tour of the <br />Union Cemetery Historic Site located on Woodside Road will occur on May 14 at <br />1:00 P.M. <br />G.H. Armour, Executive Director of the Miss Redwood City Scholarship <br />Association, introduced Miss Jessica Pedden, the new Miss Redwood City. Ms. <br />Pedden is a 24 year old graduate of Pepperdine University, recently opened her <br />own business in Redwood City. She will proceed to Fresno in June for the Miss <br />California competition where she will have the opportunity to win an additional <br />$10,000.00 with the possibility of going onto Atlantic City and become Miss <br />America. Ms. Pedden shared her experiences since becoming Miss Redwood <br />City that included her debut at the First Annual Poetry Awards, the Fourth Annual <br />Pet Parade, volunteering at Canada College reading to over 500 <br />kindergarteners, and serving as an active member of the traveling storytellers. <br />Lindsay Saier, Redwood City's Outstanding Teen, 14 years old, a freshman at <br />Notre Dame High School stated that she is looking forward to representing <br />Redwood City in June as well as becoming more involved in the community and <br />adding to her 350 hours of community service. <br />JOINT CITY COUNCIL AND APRIL 25, 2005 <br />REDEVELOPMENT AGENCY MEETING MINUTES PAGE 2 <br />MINUTES BOOK NO. 60 <br />Page No. 453 <br />
