Knowledge, Attitudes and Behaviors Regarding Marijuana: Results of a Public Opinion Survey in San Mateo County
© 2016 BRIGHT RESEARCH GROUP | 8

KNOWLEDGE OF MARIJUANA’S HEALTH IMPACTS
There is a lack of consistent knowledge about the
effects of marijuana on someone’s health. When asked
about the general potential for harm when using
marijuana, respondents varied in their knowledge and
beliefs about how harmful it could be, with 30 percent
saying “very harmful” and 23 percent saying “not at all
harmful.” Respondents were also asked about their
beliefs about the specific health risks related to
marijuana use. In several areas—such as the impact on
existing mental-‐health conditions, secondhand smoke
and the potential for marijuana to be a gateway to
other, more serious drugs—a third or more of the
respondents either disagreed or had no opinion about
whether marijuana had any impact. Public health
officials can use this data to develop public-‐education
campaigns that provide helpful information, dispel
myths and reduce harm.

How harmful to your health is marijuana if
you use it?
