�3�- �- <br /> MEMORANDUM <br /> TO: City Council . <br /> / <br /> FROM: � � Council Personnel Committee <br /> � (Jim Hartnett, Chair} <br /> (Dick Claire, Vice-Mayor) <br /> tDiane Howard, eouncilrnember) <br /> DAT�: December 8, 1999 <br /> RE: City Manager Compensation <br /> R�COMMENDATION <br /> The Personnel Committee recommends that the City Manager's base salary be <br /> increased by S°/o effective retroactive to May 1, 1999. <br /> BACKGROUND <br /> The City Manager's last c�hange in compensation was effective May 1; 1998, <br /> about 19 months ago, Before and since then Redwood City bargaining units have h�d <br /> comparable package increases (see page 2). With a 5°/o raise, the city manager's salary <br /> would be $10,(99.50 per month (plus existing benefits). <br /> Preliminary market data from the nine cities normally used as comparison <br /> cities for our bargaining units indicates that the city manager is currentfy about 8.4% below <br /> the compensatian median of $12,090. Also, as you are aware, �ompaction is always an <br /> issue to be considered within an organization. As of May 1, 1999, the difference in <br /> monthly salary between the City Manager and the next highest paid department head �nras <br /> less than 10°�. <br /> The Personnel Committee, with the assistance of the City Clerk, is undertaking <br /> a market survey to obtain data on ciry manager compensation and compaction in the nine <br /> comparison cities, plus San Carlos, Menlo Park and Belmont.
