<br />~.:S,4-1 <br /> <br />REPORT <br /> <br />To the Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />From the City Manager <br /> <br />June 27,2005 <br /> <br />Subject <br />CONSOLIDATED SPECIAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION AND GENERAL MUNICIPAL <br />ELECTION TO BE HELD ON NOVEMBER 8, 2005, CANDIDATE'S STATEMENT AND <br />RELATED MATTERS <br /> <br />Recommendation <br />Adopt resolutions calling the November 8, 2005 Special Municipal Election and General <br />Municipal Election; <br /> <br />(1.) Resolution calling Special Municipal Election and ordering consolidation with the <br />General Municipal Election and other local elections; <br />(2.) Resolution calling General Municipal Election and ordering consolidation with the <br />Special Municipal Election and other local elections; <br />(3.) Resolution authorizing execution of the contract with the County of San Mateo for <br />certain election services relating to Consolidated Special and General Municipal <br />Elections. . . <br />(4,) Motion to require a deposit of $519.00 for a candidate's statement to be translated <br />and printed in English, Chinese and Spanish as required under Section 203 of the <br />Federal Voting Rights Act, 42 U.S.C. 1973aa-1a Section 20~: All amounts are to <br />cover actual estimated costs. <br /> <br />Background <br />Redwood City Ordinance No. 2078 requires that General Municipal Elections be held in <br />November of odd-numbered years on the first Tuesday after the first Monday. For the <br />purpose of electing three (3) City Council Members for the full term of four (4) years <br />each. the City Council is requested to call for the General Municipal Election to be held <br />on November 8, 2005. <br /> <br />In December of 2004, a vacancy on the City Council occurred by the election of Ira <br />Ruskin to the California State Assembly. Pursuant to the provisions of Section 9 of the <br />Redwood City Charter, on January 24, 2005, the City Council appointed Alicia Aguirre <br />to fill the vacancy on the City Council until the next regular election at which date a <br />person shall be elected to serve for the remainder of the unexpired term. Council is <br />requested to call for a Special Election for the purpose of electing one (1) City Council <br />Member to the City Council to serve for the remainder of the unexpired term ending in <br />November 2007. <br />
