~.:S,4-1 REPORT To the Honorable Mayor and City Council From the City Manager June 27,2005 Subject CONSOLIDATED SPECIAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION AND GENERAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION TO BE HELD ON NOVEMBER 8, 2005, CANDIDATE'S STATEMENT AND RELATED MATTERS Recommendation Adopt resolutions calling the November 8, 2005 Special Municipal Election and General Municipal Election; (1.) Resolution calling Special Municipal Election and ordering consolidation with the General Municipal Election and other local elections; (2.) Resolution calling General Municipal Election and ordering consolidation with the Special Municipal Election and other local elections; (3.) Resolution authorizing execution of the contract with the County of San Mateo for certain election services relating to Consolidated Special and General Municipal Elections. . . (4,) Motion to require a deposit of $519.00 for a candidate's statement to be translated and printed in English, Chinese and Spanish as required under Section 203 of the Federal Voting Rights Act, 42 U.S.C. 1973aa-1a Section 20~: All amounts are to cover actual estimated costs. Background Redwood City Ordinance No. 2078 requires that General Municipal Elections be held in November of odd-numbered years on the first Tuesday after the first Monday. For the purpose of electing three (3) City Council Members for the full term of four (4) years each. the City Council is requested to call for the General Municipal Election to be held on November 8, 2005. In December of 2004, a vacancy on the City Council occurred by the election of Ira Ruskin to the California State Assembly. Pursuant to the provisions of Section 9 of the Redwood City Charter, on January 24, 2005, the City Council appointed Alicia Aguirre to fill the vacancy on the City Council until the next regular election at which date a person shall be elected to serve for the remainder of the unexpired term. Council is requested to call for a Special Election for the purpose of electing one (1) City Council Member to the City Council to serve for the remainder of the unexpired term ending in November 2007.
