"

9 March 1999
Joan Cardellino
Access Program Manager
Coastal Conservancy
1330 Broadway, Suite 1100
Oakland. CA 94612

Dear Ms. Cardellino,

I am writing on behalfofBayLands FrontRunners in support of the City of Palo Alto's application (ora
San Francisco Bay Access Program Grant. The proposal is to link the existing foot and bicycle trails
around the Palo Alto duck pond with trails in Byxbee Park. Connecting these two regions will be a
wonderful addition to the Bay TraiL Cummtly, Baylands Park users have to walk/runlbike along a section
of Embarcadero Road to go from the duck pond and former yacht harbor to the trails in nearby Byxbee
Par~ .

This is of great interest to Bay Lands FrontRunners. . We are a running club of approximately 450 members:
and we meet each Saturday at the Baylands Athletic Center for a 3 and 5 mile runlwalk. Our route includes
the region of interest; our runners have to run along the road leading to the dump in order to get to the
existing trails ofByxbee Park. On a typical Saturday morning, we have :!Tom 120-150 renners/walkers
enjoying the current trails of the Palo Alto Baylands and Byxbee Parks.

Our club has worked with the city of Palo Alto and their Open Space Division for our annual SkllOk race.
and we feel very confident that the City will provide the best linkage of the existing trail systems, including
the appropriate maintenance and educational signs along the trail.

Bay Lands FrontRunners is very supportive of the City of Palo Alto's efforts to improve the recreational
. opportunities available at Palo Alto Bay lands and Byxbee Park. Such improvements would provide
enhanced wildlife viewing as well as the safety of park users.

;r: {'.~

1 James E.
