. g-I
Museam Committee Report 4/5/00
1
Summary
The San Mateo County Historical Museum on Broadway has two WPA additions
on it. The Fiscal Building facing Broadway and the Annex facing Hamilton. There are
two options available and the County would like our input and potential assistance.
Option 1) Keep the two buildings, retrofit and renovate the Fiscal Building for an
art museum with Ruth Waters (of ARTshare) and the Silicon Valley Art Museum
Committee.
Option 2) Tear down FiscaI Building, renovafie former entry to Historicai
Museum, convert the open space into a park. The small annex could be torn
down or retrofit for earthquake standards (approximately $1,200,000).
Factors
Rough Costs: (Keep in mind that costs have risen 1-2 million since these estimates.)
$5,300,000 -Do earthquake retro fit of WPA structures, use Fiscal Bldg. for art
museum.
$3,300,000 - Tear dovm WPA struchtres, renovate museum entry, landscape.
Arguments for removaL•
1. Make the Museum more attactive and financially viable.
Separate study by Historical Museum consultants recommends planned restoration
of -original building, removal of WPA addition from front which would lend site to
civic activities. Original faade and dome make impressive entrance for city visitors.
It would be visually attractive and easier to find funding for museum restoration
rather than refurbishing the WPA structures. Consultants are from Stanford
Business School's Alumni Consulting Team.
2. Redwood City gains impressive visual appeal for Broadway. This also provides
needed open space which is especially important if the Cinema goes through.
 3. If th building stays and doesn't get renovated for Art Museum it will became
storage and not assist in downtown revitalization.
Arguments for keeping:
1. Art Museum could be a draw for the downtown. Museums atlract visitors.
Ruth Waters interested in creating the Silicon Valley Art Museum. She is seeking
funding from foundation's and art collections but doesn't have any hazd
commitments at this time. ETrade may be major sponsor for collection. Note: on
May 26 in Sacramento the Preservation Dept. will be making a determination of
historical value of the WPA structures.
Recummendation
1. Work with the County to have the Fiscal Building demolished, front of Historical
Museum restored and park restored.
 _ ._. __ __. .. T ._. _
