'10-1

REPORT

To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager

May 22, 2000

Subject
Hiring of Permits Technician

Recommendation
Authorize (by motion) Engineering & Construction to hire Lori Essex for the position of
Permits Technician starting at the second step of the salary range which is
$3,497.00/monthly

Background
The position of Permits Technician in Engineering and Construction will serve the public
counter as part of our "one stop," counter group.

Lori Essex comes to the City from the private sector, having spent over 19 years
working for consulting civil engineering firms in the local area. She worked as a
surveying technician and drafter for such firms as Brian-Kangas-Foulk in Redwood City,
and Wilsey & Ham Consulting Civil Engineers in Foster City. Lori also is proficient in
AutoCAD drafting, a "bonus" to the Engineers, and a skill that the other applicants did
not have. With her background and experience, Lori has more than the minimum
qualifications for the position of Permits Technician. Lori will be working primarily with
Engineering and Construction where her survey and drafting experience will be very
valuable assets to the Department of Community Development Services.

Lori has been employed as a casual employee for the past three months, serving at the
counter as our temporary Permits Technician. The consensus of the counter team and
the Engineering group is that she is a very compatible "fit" for the position.

The approval of hiring at the second step is considered reasonable for the experience
Lori brings to the position. She was the top candidate on the list of new applicants for
the position.

0 Patterson
anager, Engineering & Construction

Ea~¡-

City Manager

JPIJKL:ss
s/library/reports/lynch/hiring of permits technician

---yo- -
