~r-l

REPORT

To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager

May 15, 2000

Subject:
Surplus Property

Recommendation:
It is recommended that the City Council adopt the resolution declaring the computer
equipment on the attached list surplus property and authorize the transfer of the equipment to
the Redwood City Education Foundation.

Background:
The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department's Fair Oaks Community Center
completed its changeover from MAC to PC based computers in 1999. The surplus equipment
created by this changeover in equipment includes: seven monitors, seven keyboards, nine
hard drives, and four printers. While these items are no longer useful to the City, they are still
functional and of particular use to those in the education arena where MAC based computers
and software are still prevalent. The Redwood City Education Foundation was approached
and has agreed to receive the surplus property and in turn make sure that it is distributed
among local schools and school based programs where it is most needed.

Government Code Section 37351, and Section 3 1/2 of the Charter of Redwood City as
amended, permits the sale of any City personal property having an appraised value of five
thousand dollars or less without public notice or public bid for any reasonable amount,
irrespective of its appraised value. It also allows the City to dispose of surplus property no
longer required or needed for present, prospective municipal or public purpose without sale.
The used equipment that we recommend be transferred to the Redwood City Education
Foundation has an appraised value of less than $2,000 and no longer serves the needs of our
City.

Fiscal Impact:
In making this donation the City is foregoing less than $2,000 in potential income from the
surplus computer property.

Alternative:
Council can direct staff to include these items via the normal process of disposing of surplus
property

(;;;; ~ Þ
/ I / .
t' / J)
/,,( ~Ú£I'
Ed Everett
City Manager

~...
¡' ~.
Lv ~-.-l~
Corinne"-C'énteno
PRCS Superintendent

""'--"'--r---'--"""'" .
