REPORT

To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager

July 24, 2000

Subject
Resolution of Support for Bay Area Water Users Association

Recommendation
Adopt a resolution in support of Bay Area Water Users Association (BAWUA) concerns regarding
the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) Regional water system.

Background
On April 3, 2000 BAWUA General Manager Arthur Jensen delivered a report to the City Council
entitled the "Future of Our Water Supplies". The purpose of the presentation was to assist the
Council in becoming conversant with a growing range of concerns related to the SFPUC's
management of the regional water system. Redwood City - and many other cities - purchase
100% of all potable water from the SFPUC.

On April 14, 2000, BAWUA held a symposium for elected officials and governing bodies of the 30
BAWUA member agencies to make public the range of concerns regarding future water supply, and
to identify and articulate seven expectations that the SFPUC should immediately act upon. Mayor
Ruskin and Council Member Pierce (Council Utilities Committee member) attended.

On April 25, 2000, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission unanimously approved a long-
term Water Supply Master Plan at a Commission meeting attended by many BAWUA members,
elected officials and staff. Mayor Ruskin testified in support of the adoption of the Water Supply
Master Plan.

By adopting this resolution, Redwood City will join other BAWUA agencies responsible for
collectively providing water to over 1.4 million residents, businesses, industries and institutions in
urging the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission to meet expectations for sustaining an
adequate and dependable water supply for current and future customers.

Alternative
Do not approve the resolution

Fiscal Impact
None

Manuel Rosas ~
Public Works Superintendent

Peter Ingram V
Public Works Services Director

(j {~~--

Ed Everett
City Manager

Attachment
Resolution
Cover Letter

--- T
