1 <br /> REPORT <br /> To the Honorable Mayor and City Councii <br /> From the City Manager <br /> August 14, 2000 <br /> Subject <br /> Thermoplastic Street Markings and Street Signs Service <br /> Recommendation <br /> By Resolution, accept the bid and award the contract for the FY 2000-2001 Thermoplastic <br /> Street Markings and Street Signs Service to Chrisp Company of Fremont, CA, in the <br /> amount of $38,910.00. <br /> Background <br /> On June 26, 2000, City Council approved the specifications and the call for bids for the FY <br /> 2000-01 Thermoplastic and Signs Services. Plans and specifications were sent to four <br /> vendors. Three bids were received on July 26, 2000: <br /> Vendor Amount <br /> Chrisp Company, Fremont, CA $ 38,910.00 <br /> Diaz Corporation, San Jose, CA $ 43,131.00 <br /> Weatherly Striping Company, Inc., San Carlos, CA $ 48,983.00 <br /> Engineer's Estimate $ 54,000.00 <br /> Average bid $ 44,008.00 <br /> Chrisp Company's bid is 38.8% below the Engineer's Estimate and a valid bid. One <br /> reason for the difference between the estimate and bid is the premium price staff <br /> anticipated for the prompt completion of the work, in order to complete the school <br /> crossings as soon as possible. After discussions with Chrisp Company, this was not a <br /> factor for them. <br /> Chrisp Company has completed thermoplastic work in Redwood City as a subcontractor <br /> for the Cape Seal project contractor and performed very well. Staff is confident in their <br /> ability to complete this project in a timely manner. <br /> Staff's estimate was conservative in the original quantity estimate because the intention <br /> was to be able to complete the minimum locations around schools. With the additional <br /> budget available, staff intends to include additional pavement markings to this project after <br /> the school legends are completed.
