Yvonne Chen, Redwood City Library Director
FROM: Nancy Lewiq:ßounty Library Director

Re:

Fair Oaks Library Agreement

The San Mateo County Library Governing Board approved the agreement with the City
of Redwood City for partial funding of the Fair Oaks Library at its June 19,2000
meeting.

The Governing Board approved the agreement on the condition that it be limited to two
years, and the enclosed agreement has been revised to reflect this change. The Board is
concerned about making a longer commitment because the County Library's fiscal
projections indicate the Library will have a deficit by FY 2002-03.

The County Library's Governing Board has been working diligently to bring back more
than $2M in property taxes the Library sends to Sacramento every year. Until this long-
term funding issue is addressed either locally or at the state level, the Governing Board
believes it must be conservative about making fiscal commitments.

San Matco County Librarv operates under a Joint Powers Authority and serves the communities of Atherton, Belmont, Brisbane, East Palo Alto,
Fnqt'r Cit\" J:¡]f Moon B:¡\ '1illhral:' Pacifica.
