Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />.. ..F romtheEdgewoodTrafficCal m i n 9 Committee <br /> <br />August28,2000 <br /> <br />Subject <br />Evaluation of speed humps on Edgewood Road and stop signs on Blandford Boulevard <br /> <br />Recommendation <br />1. By motion, approve and authorize the speed humps installed on Edgewood Road, <br />and the stop signs installed on Blandford Boulevard at Turnsworth and Woodsworth <br />Avenues on a test basis in December 1999, as a permanent installation. <br /> <br />2. Direct staff to reshape the existing humps on Edgewood to conformance with the <br />City's standard for speed humps. <br /> <br />3. Direct staff to repeat traffic data collection (after reshaping of humps) to confirm <br />traffic trends and impacts on Edgewood Park area. <br /> <br />4. Direct staff to continue to explore additional traffic calming solutions in a <br />comprehensive manner for the Edgewood Park neighborhood including Blandford <br />Boulevard, easterly on Edgewood Road to EI Camino Real, in the Wellesley <br />Crescent area; Edgewood where distance is long between the current humps on <br />other local streets in the neighborhood. <br /> <br />5. Direct staff to install signage with directions to EI Camino Real, Route 280, San <br />Carlos, etc., as previously discussed. <br /> <br />6. Urge residents to report license numbers of perpetrators of deliberate sound <br />provocations at the humps to police and direct police to administer citations or stern <br />admonishments to discourage such further incidents, as appropriate. <br /> <br />Background <br />Speed humps were installed on Edgewood Road between Alameda de las Pulgas and <br />Melrose Place in late December 1999. Stop signs were concurrently installed on <br />Blandford Boulevard at Turnsworth and Woodsworth Avenues. Council direction in <br />authorizing the hump and stop sign installations was that they be evaluated after four <br />months. Mayor Ira Ruskin subsequently appointed a Committee of the Council, the <br />Edgewood Traffic Calming Committee ("the Committee") to monitor the Edgewood <br />Speed Hump/Blandford Stop Signs evaluation and related traffic calming matters in the <br />City. Committee members are Dick Claire, Jeff Ira, and Barbara Pierce (Chair). This is <br />the report and recommendation of the Committee.
