The CUITent ordinance m Redwood City
prohibits hunting 'Within 500 yards of residential or commercial buildings, as well as in
other specified areas.

. Council asked for information from neighboring citJes regarding regulations
related to hunting and distance requirements associated with firearm discharge.
Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Foster City, Newark, and Fremont all allow waterfowl
hunting withm their city limits. unless prohjbited by State or Federal law. None
oftbese cities, however, reguJate the distance a hullL~r must be from buildings
when discharging a firearm.
. CoUDcll asked for clarifi cation 011 whether or not hunting was allowed in
Corkscrew Stough. Hunting is euIrently prohibited in the following an:as of
Corkscrew Slough: 1,000 yards east ofthe confluence of Steinberger Slough ill a
perpendicular line, and 1,000 yards west of the confluence of Redwood Creek jn a
perpendicular Jine. The remaining ponion of Corkscrew Slough is Ulll"egulated.
This area is approximately 1,000 yards.
. Redwood City Code 37.8(d)(8) requires signs posted on Redwood Peninsula
"giving reasonable notice of the prohibition of shooting or hunting on sald
Peninsula." Public works is in the process of making the signs, which will be in
place before the next duck-hunting season.
. Council requested clarification on the reopen from Teny Huffman related to 1110
clapper rail. Since hunting is prohibited from land, the habitat of the clapper rail
would not be disturbed. J\ny permitted hunting would take place 500 feet from
the shoreline. According to Mr. Huffman, any impacts regarding disruption of the
clapper rail would be indjrect oncs Te1atcd to the noise generated by the boats and
gunfire. .Also, relative to dogs used to retrieve the bird.s, they would be out in the
water and not 011 the marshland. There is also no overlap between the hunting
season and the clapper rail breeding season.

cc:

Carlos G.
