. 8' o
Yage 2
Housing and Human Concerns Committee
Minutes June 27, 2000
I Commu nication
Anna t, resident of Redwood Commons, and Mr. and Mrs. Schultz have lived at this
developmen ight and four years respectively. The owners have been discussing a possible sale
for the past few ears. There have been several inspections. The owner says HUD is coming to
inspect three to fiv imes per year. The inspections were really related to loans for a possible
sale. In 1998, they w e told the building would sell but advised tenants not to move. The
tenants continue to get a n 'ce every six months that Section 8 contracts may not be renewed.
They were told if they have move, they will receive vouchers to move elsewhere but are
womed where will they be able o. They asked whether City could purchase the buildin.
They noted that many seniors aze disa ed and in even worse shape than they are. Chair advised
that Committee would agendize this item a future meeting.
Mayor Ruskin clarified that the Housin' an Human Concerns Committee (HHCC) will
aendize the matter and research the issue and the forward a recommendation to Council as
appropriate.
New Items
Housing Element Review
Maureen Riordan noted that the HHCC had worked with the Housing Element for many years
and many of the Committee's actions are imbedded into the element. The good news is that the
element has been certified. She is requesting the Committee to recommend that the Planning
Commission recommend certification by the City Council.
Member Dempsey asked whether there are any redevelopment funds left. Michael Church
eplained that the revenue is $1.5 million per yeaz and Council budgets this to specific projects.
Member Watry asked about timing for the next Housing Element and if this certification will
help with the next Housing Element Certification. Staff person Riordan said having this one
certified may help the next one and expects state to monitor programs Redwood City lists in
element to confirm if City is working to facilitating housing production. The City also needs to
continue with rezonings to provide more land for housing. Previous lands , were rezoned ten
years ajo.
Member Mahany noted on the Mission Statement that Council will meet arulually to assess the
City's housing needs with HHCC and Planning Commission. She suggests settin a specific date
that comes before the Committee's annual goal setting dates.
