REPORT

To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager

March 11, 2002

Subject
Adelante Spanish Immersion School Fun Run.

Recommendation
The City Council authorize execution of a Letter Permit for the Fifth Annual Adelante Spanish
Immersion School Fun Run.

Background
For the past four years, the Adelante Spanish Immersion School has conducted a 5K-run / 1 mile walk
fundraiser. The funds raised from this event will be used to benefit the school. The school, which is
located at 3150 Granger Way, is requesting a Letter Permit for street closures in and around the
neighborhood immediately adjacent to the school.

The event will be held March 16, 2002, and start at 9:00 a.m.

The set-up and clean up for the event will require street closures from approximately 8:00 a.m. to
10:30 a.m. The streets to be closed during the event are: Harcross Road between Granger and
Fernside, Fernside between Alameda de las Pulgas and, McGarvey, Muller Court, and Granger
between Mitchell Way, and Harcross. The streets will be opened at the conclusion of the event, or
10:30 a.m., which ever is earlier.

The police department and the Public Works Department will provide organizers with traffic control
devices. Volunteer police cadets, and police reserve officers will provide traffic control.

As they have done for the past four events, the organizers will notify residents of the affected streets
via flyer approximately ten days before the event.

Alternatives

1. The City Council could choose to authorize only a partial street closure, whereby only single
lanes of traffic are closed rather than the entire roadway. We do not recommend this alternative
as the proximity of passing vehicles in the open traffic lane would present a danger to the event
participants.

1
