<br />0 RIG I N A L <br /> <br />5/20/91 <br /> <br />RESOLUTION NO. <br /> <br />11523 <br /> <br />RESOLUTION HONORING JOHN OLIVERI FOR HIS COURAGE, AND HIS COMMITMENT <br />TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND THE CAUSE OF FREEDOM <br /> <br />WHEREAS, John Oliveri was born in Sidney, Australia on May 16, 1970, <br />emigrated to Redwood City, California in 1972 and became a <br />United States citizen in March, 1990; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, after graduating from Sequoia High School in June, 1989, John <br />joined the Army in October, 1989, served on active duty for <br />six months, and went into the Reserves in May, 1990; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, John was called back into active duty in January, 1991 and <br />sent to Saudi Arabia in February, 1991 to take part in <br />Operation Desert Storm to liberate the nation of Kuwait from <br />its Iraqi agressors; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, six days after arriving in Saudia Arabia in the course of his <br />military duties in Khobar City, Saudi Arabia, E2 John Oliveri <br />was severely injured in a nightime Scud missile attack; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, a grateful nation has expressed its pride and gratitude to <br />E2 John Oliveri by bestowing upon him the Purple Heart in <br />recognition of his courage and valor in a military campaign <br />waged to bring peace to troubled borders; <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGI LA BERGE, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF REDWOOD <br />CITY, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, do hereby call upon the citizens <br />of Redwood City to join us in honoring JOHN OLIVERI for his courage in <br />the face of great danger and his commitment to his country in time of <br />need; to recognize and pay homage to John for his painful sacrifices in <br />the cause of freedom half a world away; and to say loudly and clearly <br />for everyone to hear: Redwood City is extremely proud of of JOHN <br />OLIVERI. <br /> <br />-~. <br />
