CHAPTER 11 MOBILITY
GOAL
• Provide for the safe, efficient, and comfortable movement of pedestrians along and across El Camino Real
to promote active transportation, reduce dependence on automobiles, connect neighborhoods and desti-
nations, encourage healthy lifestyles, and increase foot traffic to local businesses.
STRATEGIES
1A Improve existing pedestrian crossings (especially at
"Activity Centers," which are described in Chapter 2)
with median refuges, bulb -outs on side streets, and
additional lighting. See also strategies under Section
2.1, Neighborhood Serving Retail (Activity Centers).
1B Install new crosswalks that are marked by over-
head lights that flash when pedestrians are crossing
(where unsignalized). Prioritize locating the new
crosswalks at Activity Centers and other locations
based on existing uses and pedestrian volumes.
Distances between crossings should generally not
exceed 600 feet.
1C Maintain development requirements for sidewalk
improvements (including 12' sidewalks, street trees,
landscaping, pedestrian lighting, bike racks, street
furniture, etc.) to improve safety and comfort for
pedestrians.
1D Encourage provision of wider sidewalks (16'+) in
Activity Centers (defined in Chapter 2) and allow
use of sidewalks for dining, mini -plazas, and other
similar and compatible flexible uses of the public
space.
1E At the Woodside Road underpass, add lighting,
public art, improved visibility/sightlines at the
approaches, and a physical barrier between the
sidewalk and roadway.
IF Remove the slip lanes and traffic islands imme-
diately north and south of the Woodside Road
underpass, and replace them with more standard
intersection configurations that increase safety for
pedestrians. Consider other uses for unused road-
way right of way, including public open space. See
also strategies under Section 1.5, Street Network
and Circulation; and Section 4.3, Parks and Plazas.
1G Establish a designated four to six foot wide
"throughway" zone (see right) on sidewalks along
El Camino Real that is clear of pedestrian obsta-
cles, including trees, landscaping, bus stops, light
posts, street furniture, signage, utility boxes, and
other obstacles.
High-intensity activated crosswalk (HAWK)
beacon
- fir■ . , — — Oo
Ea -6— Ed,, Fu i,hm9,Thr.Vhw, F -u -, i W
Sidewalk throughway zone
v
cQ
cD
N
13
m
0
0
