11 At intersections, base the protected bikeway inter-
section design on the geometry of the roadway,
available right of way, and volume of through and
turning movements, while optimizing safety for
each mode.
1J Ensure safety and compatibility between bicycle
travel and SamTrans buses, designing bus stops to
minimize conflicts with bicycles and vehicles and
allow for improved bus mobility. See also strategies
under Section 1.3, Riding Transit.
- Bus stations that are located at intersections
should be installed on the far side of the intersec-
tion so that the bus has already crossed through
the intersection before pulling up to the stop.
- Explore installing "floating islands" for bus sta-
tions that are mid -block.
Paint andlor grade changes at driveways alert both drivers and bicyclists to conflict zones.
All improvements shown are conceptual and subject to further study and refinement.
1K Continue working with the Managers Mobility
Partnership (part of Joint Venture Silicon Valley) to
create and implement a continuous safe Peninsula
Bikeway (Class IV) connecting Redwood City, Menlo
Park, Stanford, Palo Alto, and Mountain View.
1L Ensure that, with the implementation of protected
bikeways on El Camino Real, the following also
occurs:
- Driveways are designed to maintain access to
businesses while providing awareness of the
crossing zone
- Emergency vehicles may still access the side-
walk (especially at fire hydrants) and businesses,
particularly those without driveways and on-site
parking lots
- Commercial loading and solid waste service is
allowed curb access during specific times of day,
preferably in the early morning or late evening
- Increased bicycle amenities are installed along
the Corridor at key locations, such as bicycle
parking and tune-up stations
- Within a Parking Management Plan, adequate
parking is identified for existing businesses along
El Camino Real in conjunction with the removal
of on -street parking along the Corridor
CHAPTER 11 MOBILITY
i
CD
Cn
O
