REDWOOD CITY EL CAMINO REAL CORRIDOR PLAN
6
"Enhanced" bus stops, with shelters, maps,
lights, and real-time arrival information,
increase transit's appeal.
24
SECTION 1.3
RIDING TRANSIT
CONTEXT
Caltrain
The Redwood City Caltrain Station is located off of EI
Camino Real and is accessible via Winslow Street and James
Avenue. It is the fifth busiest station in the system (and the
fourth busiest "bike station"—e.g. where passengers bring
their bicycles on board)' and is served by numerous limited
and "baby bullet" trains; however, the station design is in
need of improvement, and the City is considering ways to
enhance the station's functionality, usability, and attractive-
ness by conducting a Downtown Transit Center Study.
SamTrans
SamTrans provides a fixed -route bus transit service in the
Corridor via the Redwood City Transit Center (at the Caltrain
station) with a total of 19 bus stops along EI Camino Real.
Bus service has been described as slow and therefore not a
particularly desirable mode of moving along EI Camino Real
for those commuting.
WHY IMPROVE THE TRANSIT SERVICE
AND EXPERIENCE?
Public transportation is an effective and environmentally
friendly way of moving large numbers of people. It is often
an essential travel mode for those without access to private
vehicles and provides an additional travel option for those
who do, particularly for people needing to make short trips
along the Corridor.
With Caltrain electrification coming soon, this transit service
will become even more attractive to people, so improving
multimodal access to and capacity at the station is critical. Ir
addition, when transit moves more efficiently, other modes
benefit too, due to fewer drivers on the road and reduced
conflicts with transit vehicles.
The Redwood City Transit Center serves SamTrans and Caltrain. Planned improvements
will make it more safe, functional, and pleasant.
cD
w
