REDWOOD CITY EL CAMINO REAL CORRIDOR PLAN
SECTION 2.2
OFF-STREET PARKING
CONTEXT
Many businesses along EI Camino Real have parking lots,
but many of these lots are underutilized, at least during cer-
tain hours. Other businesses, particularly smaller businesses
along EI Camino Real, lack any dedicated off-street parking.
WHY MANAGE PARKING?
When large amounts of space are dedicated to parking,
there is less space available for buildings, plazas, parks, and
other places for people. When surface parking is located
between the street and the building that it serves, it creates
an inhospitable environment for pedestrians. Managing
off-street parking along EI Camino Real will allow for more
efficient use of space on the Corridor, while still ensuring
that businesses have adequate parking available nearby. As
discussed in the previous section, providing opportunities
for shared parking, where one or more adjacent businesses
share a parking lot, can be a great support to small busi-
nesses and the development of or expansion of businesses
on smaller parcels, where it may otherwise be challenging to
provide adequate parking.
36
Where surface parking is provided, it should be well landscaped and safe for
pedestrians.
Often, ensuring that existing off-street parking is efficiently used is a matter of helping
people to find it.
cD
M
cl
