CHAPTER 41 PLACE -MAKING
GOAL
• Create a beautiful, green, and healthy street environment along El Camino Real and in adjacent develop-
ments and areas with consistent, climate appropriate and properly maintained street trees and landscaping.
STRATEGIES
4N Provide and maintain street trees within the El
Camino Real median where space allows.
40 Where sufficient right of way exists and once
permanent design for protected bikeways is de-
termined, provide landscaping (low -maintenance,
drought -tolerant shrubs and grasses) within the
physical barrier between the bikeway and the ve-
hicle travel lanes.
4P Continue to require planting and placement of new
street trees consistent with the requirements of the
applicable zoning districts along the Corridor.
40 Partner with private developers and nonprofit orga-
nizations, such as CityTrees, to increase and ad-
equately maintain the number of street trees along
the Corridor that are in the public realm, such as in
medians and other public places.
411 Ensure safety for motorists by choosing appropri-
ately sized trees and limiting their presence near
intersections and in front of traffic signage.
4S Where space and other conditions permit, create
bioswales or "rain gardens" in sidewalk planting
strips and other landscaped areas to naturally col-
lect and filter stormwater runoff from the roadway
and other impervious surfaces.
0
4T In Activity Centers where wider sidewalks are pro-
vided, strongly encourage provision of additional
landscaping to enhance the pedestrian environ-
ment and add greenery to outdoor seating areas
and mini -plazas, while ensuring sensitive placement
to maintain visibility of businesses and signs.
v
cQ
cD
co
N
