REDWOOD CITY EL CAMINO REAL CORRIDOR PLAN
20
GOAL
• Promote, provide, and maintain a safe and convenient system of bicycle transportation on El Camino Real
to promote active transportation, reduce dependency on automobiles, enable recreation, connect the
community, encourage healthy lifestyles, and facilitate bicycling as a viable mode of travel for all ages and
abilities.
StRAteGIeS
1H Facilitate safe, efficient, and convenient bicycle
travel on El Camino Real through implementation
of Class IV or “protected” bikeways, which are on
the roadway but physically separated from vehicle
traffic. The preferred design, which is subject to
change and refinement with further study and
through testing or pilot programs, features:
-Curbside protected bikeways (one way in each direction
of travel) where on-street parking and “red curb” zones
currently exist.
-Protection from vehicle lanes using a physical raised
barrier and/or wide striped painted buffer with “soft-hit”
posts, with the design determined by conditions, avail-
able right of way, emergency vehicle and curbside access
needs.
-Continuous implementation from Northumberland
Street in the south to Whipple Road in the north, extend-
ing further north from Whipple to the northern city limits
as available right of way and conditions for safety allow.
-
Where there is a high volume of right-turning cars, right turn lanes should be main-
tained, and a clear and safe path for bicycles demarcated. All improvements shown
are conceptual and subject to further study and refinement.
Where there are fewer cars turning right, fully protected intersections should be
considered. All improvements shown are conceptual and subject to further study and
refinement.Source: asla.orgSource: eltis.org
