If approved, these increases will be effective on January
15, 2018. The purpose of this notice is to describe the proposed rate increases and to notify you of the
public hearing.

THE PROPOSAL
The City Council will consider the following proposed solid waste rate increases at the City Council meeting
on January 8, 2018:
 A 3.34% CPI increase for regular, scheduled, basic collection of residential and commercial solid
waste and recyclable materials, and
 A 1.72% CPI increase for unscheduled solid waste services as listed on this Notice.

The purpose of the City’s solid waste rates is to recover the costs of providing solid waste services, which
are provided by Recology San Mateo County under contract with the City. The proposed rate increases
are designed to ensure that the revenue collected from the solid waste rates is sufficient to cover the full
costs of providing solid waste services.

REGULAR SERVICE
A 3.34% CPI increase is proposed for regular, scheduled, basic collection of residential and commercial
solid waste and recyclable materials. The proposed 3.34% increase is based on the one year change in
the U. S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers
in the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose, CA area. Redwood City has not increased regular solid waste
collection rates since 2013. Even with the CPI adjustment, the proposed rates will remain less than the
average for the area. For a residential customer with a 32-gallon cart, the increase amounts to a little less
than one dollar a month.

Figure 1: Comparison of 2017 Residential Solid Waste Rates, based on 32-Gal Cart Figure 2: Comparison of 2017 Commercial Solid Waste Rates, based on 3yd subscription level Current & Proposed Regular Solid Waste Rates Residential Monthly Rates Capacity Current Rate (Per Cart) Proposed Rate (Per Cart) Effective on 01/15/2018 20 gallons $11.38 $11.76 32 gallons $27.30 $28.21 64 gallons $54.61 $56.43 96 gallons $81.06 $83.77 Residential customers are billed every other month.
