Redwood City Police
Department System Description
l;
RADIO NETWORK CONTROZLER
The Radio Network Controller(RNC)is the core of the Redwood
City, Foster City, and Hillsborough Police Mobile Data System.
The RNC provides the interface between the host site ecuipment
and the radio base site tha.t comprise the network backbone. As
designed for this system, the RNC is configured to acconzmodate
up to 8 initial base site data stations and is expandable to support a
total of 64 stations.
The major function of the RNC is to route messages between the
CAD system and the Mobile Data Devices (MDDs)while ensuring
reliable delivery to each in the correct protocol. In doing this, the
RNC maintains a detailed database of the operational parameters
and performance status of all hackbone and device system
components.
The RNC is based on a VME azclutecture utilizing a Motorola
68030-based control processor with 3.5" floppy drive, hard disk
drive, and a configurable number of 68020-based UO processors.
The design is modulaz in order to accommodate various radio site
`' configurations. - - - -
The chassis of the RNC provides the housing for the system
components, a power supply, cooling fans, and AC power control.
The RNC utilizes this powerful azchitecture to perform the
functions described below:
Message Routing
The RNC routes messages between the message switch and the
NIDDs by establislung a link with the most appmpriate backbone
site. This function is based on a dynamic registration table that
constantly tracks each NIDD using the inbound signal strength of
transmissions. In this way, the RNC's registration table
automatically decides which site to key for message transmission.
This leaves the remaining backbone site open and available to send
and receive messages if no areas of coverage overlap exist.
Protocol Conversion
The RNC is responsible for receiving host initiated messages,
, converting them to the Radio Data Link Access Proceduere
QMOTOROLA ' 2 ' 2
. _ _ _ _
