Redwood City Police
Department System Performance
\ impact on system coverage. The areas marked by a percentage
' covetage reliability may contain locations where radio coverage
always occurs, as well as some in which radio coverage is never
experienced. Shielding may occur in tunnels, under bridges and `_
inside parking structures. These areas are not specifically
identified in the coverage predictions presented. Users
encountering such areas should be advised to drive their vehicle a
short distance to reposition the radio antenna away from obstacles
for clear communications.
RELIABILITY - -
;,-:;p; Like alI Motorola products, mobile data systems and products are
` ' designed and built to meet the highest quality standards. This
system for the City of Hillsborough Police Department is designed
with multiple layers of reliability including system alarms,
component diagnostics, Fieid Replacement Units (FRLn and the
capability for RNC redundancy.
The RNC and Data Base Station work together to provide a
network of distributed alarm monitoring and centralized alarm
display. The RNC to radio infrastructure site links as well as
components of the DBS and RNC themselves.aze continuously
` monitored and tested. The results of these procedures, as well as
any system alazms, are available at a local or remote RNC console.
Additionally, each component in this system, including Mobile
Data Terminals,initiate a self-diagnostic sequence upon power-up.
The modular design of Motorola's Mobile Data System
components allows any product repairs to be conducted quickly
_ ..,_ and easily. Field Replacement Units (FRUs) allow a qualified ..
technician to remove an entire fimctional moduie from a unit and "
exchange it with a tested and operating replacement T'his allows a
disabled module to be repaired at an appropriately equipped shop
or location and not on a mountain top site. This approach is
extended to Mobile Data Terminals so that in a total of
approximately 15 minutes, an officer can azrive at an equipped
service location with a malfunctioned Mobile Data Terminal and
leave with an operationally equivalent, fullY functional substitute.
As mentioned in the Functional System Description section of this
proposal,the RNC, although currently confiSv'ed for stand-alone
use in this system, is designed with the caPability to accommodate
full stand-by redundancy operation. This configuration may be
incorporated at system implementation, following negotiation, or it
MOTOROL4 3 - i s
_ . _ _ _ __ _._ __ _
