January 14, 2002 <br />Subject <br />Award Of Contract - Main Library Mobile Compact Shelving Project <br />Engineering File No. 803-02 <br />Recommendation <br />Approve the award of contract for the construction of the Main Library Mobile Compact <br />Shelving Project to the lowest responsible bidder, Yamada Enterprises of Huntington <br />Beach, California for the amount of $26,664. <br />Background <br />With the increased usage of computers, and the need to provide a place for students to <br />study, a Computer Lab Homework Tutoring Center within the closed stack area of the <br />Main Library was proposed. In order to create the additional room/space, for the new <br />computer lab, the existing open shelving must be consolidated so as to create <br />additional space. <br />The Mobile Compact Shelving Project will accomplish the increase in area/space by <br />reducing and replacing the "shelving space" from approximately 60 linear feet to 25 <br />linear feet, while still holding the same number of books. <br />On Wednesday, December 13, 2001, three (3) bids were received by the City Clerk, <br />and the following are the resulting bids: <br /> <br />Rank 'Bidder Amount <br />1. Hopley Co. - Santa Rosa, CA $30,450.00 <br />4. <br /> (Engineer's Estimate of $35,000) <br />Alternative <br />Do not award the contract for the Main Library Mobile Compact Shelving Project, which <br />would be contrary to previous Council action. <br /> <br /> <br />
