-/I I

To the Honorable Mayor and.~i~ Council
From the C,ty Manager

February 25, 2002

Subject
Emergency Engine Repair on Fire Pumper Truck #8071

Recommendation
By motion authorize payment for contracted services retroactively to Stewart & Stevenson,
Inc of San Leandro, CA in the amount of $20,626.03 for the emergency repair of fire
pumper truck #-8071.

Background
On December 27, 2001, while coming back from an emergency medical call fire pumper
truck #8071 began experiencing an overheating problem. The truck was driven to the
Municipal Services Center where staff technicians found coolant contamination in the
engine oil. That same afternoon staff had the pumper truck towed to a factory authorized
repair facility (Stewart & Stevenson ) for a more in-depth engine diagnosis. Factory
technicians found the engine head gasket had failed, permitting coolant to contaminate the
engine oil which resulted in scorched cylinder wall linings, burnt pistons and bearings. An
immediate engine overhaul was necessary and authorized by the Public Works Services
Director.

Since fire pumper trucks are a "level one" operational priority, staff authorized the
immediate repairs of this engine for an estimated $20,000 to $21,000. The fire pumper
truck went back into service on January 18, 2002.

Alternatives
Due to the emergency nature of this repair and the need to have this pumper truck back
in service as soon as possible, alternatives available to the City Council are limited to
approval or disapproval of payment for services.

Fiscal Impact
Funds are available in the approved Fiscal Year 2001/02 Equipment Services operating
and maintenance budget.

Larry B,a~vacz ~ Peter Ingram ~jv Ed Everett
Publi(~Norks SuperintEndent Public Works Services Director City Manager

Attachment
None
