3. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE - Jim Hartnett, Council Member <br />4. INVOCATION - Pastor Mike O'berg, Messiah Lutheran Church <br />5. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS AND CONSENT CALENDAR <br />Tom Mohr, interim President of Canada College, stated that during the intervening <br />months while going through a national search, the District will do everything possible <br />to stay well connected with the City Council. He stated that it is part of the legacy of <br />the college and will continue. He announced the groundbreaking ceremony for the <br />new library and student services center at Canada College on August 25 at 2:00 <br />p.m. He reaffirmed the great legacy that has been rendered at the college <br />connecting with the community. <br />Janet Borgens stated that when the City Council, staff and citizens decided to <br />change the 2600 block of Broadway she was not sure but that it is a wonderful <br />transition. When the decision was made to tear down the facade of the courthouse, <br />she was not sure about it but it is fantastic. When the proposal to build the theatre <br />arose she was skeptical. One of the things she has noticed downtown is that there <br />are many restaurants with tables outside, everybody is walking around happy to be <br />there and it is wonderful to watch it happen. <br />Charlene Wright stated that while house hunting in Redwood City she had the <br />pleasure of interacting with the Planning division and it was fun. The office staff was <br />pleasant, answered all questions and was overall fantastic. <br />Police Captain Ron Matuszak gave a report on crimes that occurred during the <br />month of July; and gang problems in Redwood City and the Police Department's <br />reaction to handling those. He stated that Police is currently working with the Fire <br />Department, San Mateo County Crime Lab, and both Federal and State law <br />enforcement to solve the crimes. He recognized that there is a legitimate concern <br />with gang activity and that it is a concern that the Police Department has worked with <br />for years and will continue to in the foreseeable future. He stated that the Police <br />Department's approach to gangs is two -fold: Work towards prevention and <br />intervention; and when a serious crime is committed, strict law enforcement. He <br />further stated that there is a substantial effort into helping the youth in the community <br />with a full time juvenile counselor on staff and was retained in spite of reductions to <br />sworn personnel. A juvenile detective works with the youth teaching about gang <br />violence in the middle schools, there are numerous after school activities through <br />PAL with all efforts designed to keep youth out of gangs. Violent crime requires strict <br />law enforcement with the goal being to identify the offender, arrest the person and <br />have them removed from the community.
