RESOLUTION OF SUPPORT FOR CALIFORNIA STATE <br /> PROPOSITION 42, THE TRANSPORTATION <br /> CONGESTION IMPROVEMENT ACT, ON THE MARCH 5, <br /> 2002 STATEWIDE BALLOT <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Redwood City recognizes that traffic, congested <br />transportation corridors, and overcrowded roadways are significant problems in <br />our community, and throughout the State of California; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, California has the third-worst deteriorated roadways in the <br />nation, with more than 6,000 bridges and overpasses structurally deficient or no <br />longer meeting highway safety or design standards; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Proposition 42, the Transportation Congestion Improvement <br />Act, on the March 5, 2002 ballot, will allocate a portion of the existing State <br />gasoline sales tax to cities and counties to be used for transportation <br />improvements; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Proposition 42 will provide guaranteed funding to every city <br />and county in California to help fix potholes, repair dangerous road conditions, <br />and perform other road maintenance, thereby improving the safety of children <br />walking or biking to school; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Proposition 42 will be a stable and ongoing source of <br />transportation funding, will allow for adequate planning to address future <br />transportation needs, and will help speed up highway safety and traffic relief <br />projects, and expand and improve mass transit systems; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Proposition 42 is based on the principle that taxes paid at the <br />gas pump should be used for transportation purposes; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Proposition 42 will help make our roads safer and reduce <br />traffic without higher taxes, by requiring that gasoline sales taxes already in place <br />be used to improve mass transit, highways, and local roads. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />REDWOOD CITY SUPPORTS AND ENDORSES PROPOSITION 42, THE <br />TRANSPORTATION CONGESTION IMPROVEMENT ACT, ON THE MARCH 5, <br />2002 STATEWIDE BALLOT <br /> <br />F:Atty/Reso/Reso,1275 <br />013002 <br /> <br /> <br />
