.v-
REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the Cit Mana er
September 26, 2005
Subject
Consultant Agreement for Engineering Design Services for the Redwood Shores Sewer
Pump Station No. 15 Improvement Project
Recommendation
Approve and authorize an agreement with Nolte Associates, Inc., of San Jose,
California, for providing Consulting Engineering Design Services for the Design of the
Redwood Shores Sewer Pump Station No. 15 Improvement Project, in an amount not
to exceed $66,326.00.
Background
The ground elevation in Redwood Shores Area is relatively flat and does not allow for
the use of gravity flow in the sewage system. Therefore, a network of sewer pump
stations was installed as the different areas of Redwood Shores were developed.
Redwood Shores currently has a total of 26 sewer pump stations (Stations Nos. 1-25,
and Centrum Station).
Station No. 15 was originally built in 1982. Although the station is not among the oldest
(compared to those built in the sixties), its pumps and controls are outdated, and
rehabilitation is needed to bring it up to standards. Improvements will concentrate on
new submersible pumps in the wet well, which will improve maintenance crew safety by
eliminating the need for confined space entry into the dry well. New variable frequency
drives will enhance the efficiency of the pumps, and new pipings and rehabilitation of
the wet well surface will extend the useful life of the station.
After review of different proposals from different firms, Nolte Associates, Inc. proves to
be qualified and experienced in this very specialized field, and is familiar with the City's
requirements and standards. The design fees are competitive with industry standards.
A complete copy of the agreement is available for review in the City Clerk's office.
Alternative
Do not approve the design agreement, resulting in a delay of much needed
improvements to the pump station.
-1-
_.
