,- z
CalTrans and are currently working with them to assess the feasibility for "Historic Downtown"
signs near these exits. We are also discussing EI Camino Real and Woodside Road sign
locations with CalTrans, as necessary.
Primary and secondary key streets leading to the main destinations and all parking facilities
have also been identified. We identified Jefferson and Broadway as the "100%" corner, which
gave us the framework for choosing routes for the first time visitor. This also assisted us in
identifying second and maybe third phase signage.
The sign program must address both pedestrians and vehicles and works on a hierarchy. We
chose to use consistent geometric shapes and "sign grammar" to make the signs easy to
recognize and to differentiate it from all other signs. It will also have some color coding
related to "mini-districts" or activity nodes to help orient people. Wayfinding "you are here"
maps have been developed (see Attachment 1) that will be strategically scattered throughout
the downtown, particularly near or within parking facilities and other important decision-
making locations.
In order to study the size, font and legibility of the proposed design concept, mock-ups have
been installed. We currently have three mock-up locations: one on Veteran's before Whipple
as you exit 101 going south; one on Broadway near Woodside Road, and one on Middlefield
at Bradford. These mock-ups are not the final color, but are simply intended to test the sign
size and font legibility for various street widths, distances and speeds for both vehicles and
pedestrians.
Analysis
Upon approval of a program concept by the Council, contracts for design development and
the construction drawings will be executed with Catalyst and the program concepts finalized
and bid documents prepared. Specific locations will be identified for the primary (Broadway
and Jefferson) and key secondary streets (Middlefield, Main, EI Camino Real, Woodside, etc).
Signage along other routes that could be considered secondary or tertiary streets and routes
will be located contingent upon funding availability.
Deciding locations for the signs is a tedious task, particularly given a limited budget. Also, the
City and its downtown are ever changing. Through the strategic use of directional signage,
we hope to minimize, if not efiminate, confusion to the first time visitor whether in a car or as a
pedestrian. It is important to keep in mind that the process will require a trial-and-error, or
adaptive approach, which accommodates new destinations, new street fixtures including
trees, etc.
Sign strategy and the schematic design have been finalized. We are now refining the
conceptual design, studying color combinations and integration, materials, mounting and
bracket types as well as evaluating the mock-ups for the presentation to Council on
September 26 We are also diligently building the message schedule matrix for bidding,
manufacturing and installation purposes.
A community meeting has been scheduled for the Library Community Room on September 14
at 6:30 pm. Notices were sent to all property owners and businesses in the downtown precise
1:2005 STAFF REPORTS, AGREEMENTS\09-2005\
Wanding 2
