5. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS AND CONSENT CALENDAR <br />Michael Sullivan, new Development Director of the San Mateo County History <br />Museum, thanked the Council Members and. Police Chief who participated in the <br />recent "dunk tank" fundraiser. He reminded the community of the candidates' night <br />on September 13 and the Columbus celebration on October 8 from 11:30 -2:30 at <br />the History Museum. <br />Barbara Boles, President of the local League of Women Voters, announced to the <br />Council and community that the League is sponsoring a Candidates' Forum in the <br />City Council Chambers on Thursday, September 29 from 7:30 -9:30 p.m. The forum <br />will be videotaped for rebroadcast on Peninsula TV before the election and may be <br />broadcast live on the regular Council access channel. She stated the hope that <br />interested residents will attend the forum and provide challenging questions for the <br />candidates. <br />Andy Frisch, speaking on behalf of Redwood City International, invited the Council <br />and community to attend the annual Mexican Independence Day celebration on <br />Thursday,. September 15, from 5:30 -8:00 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Senior <br />Center. Redwood City has two sister cities, Zhuhai, China and Colima, Mexico <br />which this fundraising event will benefit. <br />Pete Hughes stated that the Redwood Shores Community Association held its <br />annual levee clean -up where 12 cubic yards of refuse material was collected by 100 <br />volunteers. He announced the candidates' forum at Sandpiper Community Center in <br />Redwood Shores on October 12 at 7:30 p.m. With the upcoming election, he stated <br />that he likes the direction of the Council and that he would like to have them back <br />again. <br />Kathy Schrenk stated that she lives on McGarvey Avenue at the intersection of <br />Connecticut and she wished to, speak about. speeding on McGarvey Avenue. <br />Although there has been good response with a sign installation in the crosswalk at <br />Connecticut, the sign has had some issues. She showed a photograph of the sign <br />that has been intentionally hit and has finally been destroyed. She stated that the <br />speeding problems have actually worsened and the last Wednesday night another <br />accident occurred.
