'-¡,

232

#

anticipating over 200 in atten~ance. They have been visiting schools and advertisini'
the event. They want teens to feel welcome and know they have a place they can go.
Beginning in November, special events will be offered one ni&ht each week. Bowling and
horsebackriding are the first on the agenda. A bike club is also being formed ",which
will teach safety and bike.måin'.t.enance as well as exploring bike trails. The Center
is putting out a monthly newsle~ter which will info~ the teens of the coming events.
There are already 125 names on the mailing list. The Center wants to offer a full
program to interest teens and would like to encourage graduates to return and offer
volunteer services.

Chairman Schenck was concerned about the costs to citizens for the programs offered
with regard to the salaries paid to the instructors. He felt some controls on their
salary should be arranged. At the present time the range is very broad; however, Super-
visor Hartman assured Chairman Schenck that this was definitely taken into consideration.

Commissioner Knecht was pleased to hear that steps were being taken to insure that pro-
grams were not duplicated throughout the City.

Commissioner Weintraub was concerned that publicity reach all areas of Redwood City
so that all or as many as possible of the teens could be informed of what the Center
has to offer.

Commissioner Guida stated that he felt there was definitely a lack of teen programs
for teenage girls. Supervisor Mosher explained that all the programs offered at the
Center will be co-educational.

Commissioner Guida suggested building a drop-in area at the Center and Mr. Weeks ex-
plained this would be considered in the budget process and studied thoroughly.

Chairman Schenck was impressed with the presentations and expressed a desire to have
the Park Division also give presentations. Mr. Weeks explained that this was already
included as a part of the program as well as a presentat on from the Marina.

2.

~en Space Committee

The report as submitted by the Open Space Committee was discussed and accepted by the
Corrmission.

3.

Community Park Committee

The report from the Community Park Committee was presented by Committee Chairman Guida.
The priorities as presented in the report were discussed. It was pointed out that the
major items were indicated in the report as originally proposed in Phase 2 and 3 of
the original construction outline. The Committee indicated that the priority projects
were being considered for design and construction. However, the estimate of costs
of the projects will determine the extent of the projects that can be completed with
current funding. It was also pointed out that if the Commission approved the suggested
priorities for the next phases of construction, the procedure would then be to pro-
ceed with the consultant in order to arrive at preliminary cost estimates prior to the
Corrmission forwarding the new scope of work to the City Council for final approval.
Upon completion of the discussion of the report, the Commission received and accepted
the report as presented by the Committee.
