- .... '--

30

MOTION:

Commissioner Pound moved that the report be accepted, '
seconded by Commissioner Schenck.

REPORT ITEM 3 - M9nthly Repor~s

A. ~~rtment Repor~s

Mr. Weeks added that Hetch-Hetchy Right-of-Way and Canyon Park design
contracts had been approved by the City Council. He also mentioned that
Little League is now accepting girls on their teams.

The problem at Hoover Pool was discussed. Two pumps malfunctioned and
had to be replaced. They will be installed within fourteen days and
this should take place approximately by July 8 and completed by July 12.
The Department is hoping to open the pool for recreation swimming on
July 12. The first two sessions of swtmming instruction may be lost.
The Department is currently rescheduling as many classes as possible
to Community Park.

B. Other ~eE9rts

The Capital Improvement Program, as approved by the City Council, was
reviewed and discussed: Joint use of the School District's Santa Clara
property was discussed. It now appears the property will be sold and
there does not appear to be much chance of obtaining a lease agreement.

The Elementary School District's possible withdrawal of funds to support
the winter After School Program was discussed. It was apparent to the
Commission that if the funds are withdrawn there will be a significant
reduction in the After-School Programming conducted by the Department
throughout the community. Bill Paulson stated that the school contri-
butes approximately fifty percent of the after school program. Currently
there are fifteen schools with approximately two to two and one half
staff people assigned to the schools from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. If the
program were to be cut back, the employment, of course, would also have
to be cut back. The various other alternatives with respect to program
reduction were also discussed.

Commissioner Rollins stated that he felt many values were derived from
this program and that there should be more discussion before a final
decision is reached by the Elementary School District. It was pointed
out that the staff is involved in discussions at their level with school
district representatives concerning the ramifications of the proposed
cut back. It was the consensus of the Commission that it would be
advantageous to all concerned if, through the City Manager, some state-
ment could be transmitted to the District Superintendent requesting the
opportunity to more thoroughly study the impact on the community prior
to a final decision being made.

MOTION:

A motion was made by Commissioner Rollins and seconded by
Commissioner Pound that the Parks & Recreation Commission
recommends that the City Manager contact the Superintendent
of the Elementary School District and suggest that, if at all
possible, the proposed cut back be deferred until such time
as a thorough study of the total community impact and program
restructuring can be completed.

"'.

--"-""

"----""

~,--,..-

t
