./' .

. ,
f.- .."

==- ~/~81

1.

The park should not present a probLem to the adjoining residential
areas with regard to noise, tennis court lighting, etc.

2.

It is desirable for- the area not to appear obviously undeveloped for
a long period of time, especially if it is located in the heart of a
development area.

3.

The community park will not only serve the entire Redwood Shores
Peninsula, but also will serve Redwood City and some of the other
adjoining cities. As such, it is suspected that the majority of
these users will arrive via automobile. Those living in the area
will probably arrive via bicycle or on foot. Therefore, the site
should be accessible from a major street and also from the levee and
walkway areas.

4.

It appears to be the policy of the Belmont School District to locate
the elementary and junior high schools adjacent to a park where pos-
sible. The joint use of park and school enables the acreage required
for both purposes to be reduced by approximately thirty percent.

Mr. Smith further added that the criteria for the school site, as stated
by the Belmont School District, was as follows:

1.

A buildable site location should be sought, without foundation problems,
of approximately twelve acres if located adjacent to a park.

2.

Preferably it should not be iocated in an area of potential hazard.

3.

The site should be centrally located so it may adequately serve
all students within a one mile radius.

4.

Ideally the majority of students should not have to pass over a major
roadway to reach the school.

5.

The school should be separated from the internal waterway system.

Mr. Smith went on to say that Mobil believed that the combination of a
community park and the junior school site could best fulfill most of
these criteria by locating the site along the edge of the Steinberger
Slough. He further indicated that the Steinberger Slough site lacked
building constràints, thus increasing design flexibility. Hr. Smith
concluded the presentation by respectfully requesting approval of the
Mobil Oil Estates General Plan site for the community park site.

A question and answer discussion then followed. Mr. Ron MacQuarrie,
representing the Redwood Shores Sailing Association, addressed the Com-
mission about the proposed straightening of the shoreline of the inland
waterways which he felt would not only restrict the sailing activities
in the waterway, but would also materially adversely affect the aesthetics
of the area. It was his feeling that if the wa terway shoreline was to be
a straight shoreline, then bulkheads should be constructed so as to maxi-
mize the sailing space. He also spoke of the possibility of providing
