-

"-

. 90

During a rather thorough discussion, it was pointed out that from a
park operational point of view, the three locations south of the inland
waterway would be pre£erred over the site to the northwest of the water~
way in that they would better serve the majority of the population of
Redwood Shores. It was further pointed out that with reference to the
three preferred sites, the specific location was not that critical to
the success of a community park. The distances involved between. the
park sites were not significant with respect to the location, except as
to how the park might relate to the proposed junior high school site. --
It was pointed out to the Commission that they had previously indicated
to the Planning Co~ssion their support of the concept of attempting
to develop school-park combinations, not only in neighborhood park areas
but also in the community park.

It was the consensus of opinion of the Commissioners present that the
Steinberger Slough site would best meet the needs of the community park
site. It was their feeling that the advantages of tying in the wa~er
tank area together with the school site, as well as the state lands,
would offer a wider range of utilization of the site together with
enhancing the aesthetic value of the site along the water area. It
was pointed out that this site would provide greater possibilities for
nature study and environmental enhancement, both for the park and the
schools in this area. Access to the area could be adequately provided,
both for school children and for park patrons. Even though it was
recognized that the other park sites cou1d be separated from residences
by streets, it was felt the site along the Steinberger Slough would offer
the least amount of noise and conflict with residences from the park
site. Also, having access to bay waters through Steinberger Slough
could provide water access possibilities directly from the park which
would result in greater usability of the park.

The Commission urged that every effort should be made to locate the
junior high school adjacent to the proposed community park, which could
result in less acreage requirements on the part of both agencies. The
Commission agreed that the details of acreage and the configuration of
the park-school site could be dealt with adequately when the area
entered the development stages.

MOTION:

Commissioner Pound moved that the Parks & Recreation
Commission recommend to the Planning Commission the
Steinberger Slough site as the site for the location
of the community park and strongly recommend that the
Belmont School District locate their junior high school
adjacent to the park, seconded by Co~ssioner Aldrich.

The motion carried unanimously by voice vote.
