-~~- ~ t9 3

CORRESPONDENCE

Chairman Knecht announced that the Civic Cultural Commission meeting scheduled
for July 10,1975 was cancelled and rescheduled to August 7,1975 at,the Commu-
nity Activities Building.

Mr. Weeks indicated that he had copies of the San Mateo County Minutes of
May 14 and June 11,1975 along with a copy of the Midpeninsu1a Regional
Park District minutes. These were passed around to the Còmmission.

AGENDA ITEM - Discussîõh of Senior~Center Study Re~tt

The seniors present from the Senior Center Committee were introduced by the
Chairman of that Committee, Mr. William Morrissey.

Mr. Weeks referred to the Senior Center Study report and requested the Commis-
sion's comments and questions. He indicated the report merited close study and
considerable discussion prior to the Commission's final recommendations to the
City Council. The report attempts to point out the important factors of the
study and it attempts to relate the objective opinions of the Committee.
The recommendations and conclusions are somewhat general even though the Staff
and Committee did attempt to categorize and prioritize the recommendations.

Mr. Weeks indicated that the Staff and the Committee worked diligently on the
report, and he fel t that the findings and the review that was made is of
sufficient nature to give both the Parks & Recreation and the City Council
alternatives from which to choose.

A question and answer discussion followed. Bill Morrissey indicated that the
Committee was created in an effort to represent Redwood City from a geographical
standpoint. Citizens over sixty years of age represent over 7,300 seniors
and those between fifty and fifty-nine years of age represent an additional
6,900. There is a total of approximately 14,256 senior citizens residing in
Redwood City.

Commissioner Schlesinger asked if revènue sharing funds had ever been used for
capital improvements. Mr. Weeks stated that revenue sharing funds have largely
been used for capi tal improvement's. The onl y portion of those fund s which have
not been used for capital improvement have been those that have been committed
to the social programs such as those involved at the Fair Oaks Community Center.
As the Senior Center report indicated, the Council will be studying and making
their determination as to what the allocations of those funds may be next year.
Whether these funds will be entirely committed will be a determination of
the Council. The report also attempted to point out the various methods of
funding and the Senior Center Committee make and prioritized their final recom-
mendations based upon what they felt" might be the best method of acquiring funds.
It was felt that Revenue Sharing and Capital Improvement funds might be the first

. ".
prIorIty.

Mr. Weeks mentioned that the Committee felt they should point out the various

I

methods of funding. The Committee is not seeking full funding initially;
they are basically looking for acceptance of concepts based upon the study and
based upon the two to four viable options. The basic request for funds is,
hopefully, to convince the Parks & Recreation Commission and the City Council
that additional feasibility and basic planning funds should be allocated.

III

~ :
" '-,,' :,,', - ~~,~

, ~

, ,

, . ;.'
" < ' ,
, " ',' , ,
'-',".
