. ..
;.. -'18

'"

..

NOTES FROM JOINT STUDY SESSION/PARK TOUR - CITY COUNCIL/P&R COMMISSION
Saturday, October 27, 1990 -'Community Activities Building

Vice Mayor Bury called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m.

1.

Effectiveness of P & R Commission

Chairperson Howard asked the City Council what direction they wanted the
Parks & Recreation Commission to go; what direction they saw the Commission
going; what directiòn did the Council wish them to go? Because of budget
cuts, was there something the Commission could do to educate the public and
involve them (e.g. increased volunteerism).

Bury responded that Commission was doing fine and that it was wise to look
ahead to the coming years and determine where we wanted to be and steps
necessary to get there.

Griffiths reviewed the plans for the new police station and explained the
process of landscaping and the involvement of his department in the
process. All P & R Commissioners are kept abreast of all projects but is
not necessarily involved with the projects.

Buchan stated that Redwood City recently sent a team to a regional IINo Drug
Zone" meeting and as a result want to establish Hoover Park & School as a
IIdrug free zonell. The next step, is to identify the stakeholders and
arrange a meeting. Perhaps sometime in the future the P & R Commission
will be involved in this matter but right now it1s still in the planning
stages.

Bury said he saw the Commission was an advisory group to the City. Council;
a community liaison; to facilitate the channeling of information to proper
groups. He saw the Commission1s role as interested, caring, reminding the
public.

Murray asked if there was something specific the Commission had in mind
that it wanted to do and wished to discuss.

Mortensen said there was no hidden thought; wanted to know if the
Commission was doing its job.

Howard .said because the Commission sees something, such as the
deteriorization of Red Morton gym, and wants to be part of the planning
process.

. .

Murray suggested that if the Commission felt strongry.-about a particular
project-that it should advocate for th.at project; make the City Council
make harder decisions as that is their job. .

Stangel said that since Redwood City does not have a golf course perhaps
they would want to consider establishing one (his personal request).

Buchan felt that the Commission was already pro-active.

,
"
,

. .' , ",'.'
