McKinley School has one football team, 6 basketball
teams and one volleyball team. Supervisor Blondino says he estimates that
450-500 students are participating in sports programs and says he receives
good support from the schools. The Department also sponsors a basketball
tournament each year and this year hopes to include 8th grade girls.

Supervisor Blondino mentioned that the condition of the school fields are
very poor and staff has estimated that it would cost approximately $4.1
million to renovate all the fields to current Department standards. He has
met with the school district to address the issue of field conditions but
unfortunately due to
lack of funding, the district is unable to make any renovations at this time.
Supervisor Blondino stressed that the fields need to be made safer for the
sports participants and said he has done work himself to try to prepare the
fields.

Supervisor Blondino said that the most popular teen event is the IILock-In
Nightll and mentioned the last lock-in event had 54 students in attendance.
Also popular are the WOOl and Scandia Trip. The Summer Teen Club is also
popular and flyers are made up for all 5th & 6th grade students with a
calendar of events. He mentioned that each week he spends 2 days a week at
Kennedy and 2 days at McKinley during lunchtime in order to maintain contact
with each school and keep them abreast of program events and changes. He
said that he has been offered a spot in the Redwood City School District
Newsletter and ;s very excited about this new avenue of communication.
Supervisor Blondino mentioned that he wants to add more educational trips to
the teen program. In addition, he is working with Therapeutic Coordinator
Erlinda Tulioc to coordinate a joint event with their two groups to attend
a Sharks hockey game. He also said he is looking into the formation of a
Teen Advisory Council.

Supervisor Blondino said the Red Morton Recreation Center operates very well
in the evenings and has a well-trained night staff consisting of two people.
He said that floor hockey for ages 11-15 ;s a very popular program and has
approximately 2-3 shifts of students. He is also trying to get the floor
hockey program included into the hockey program sponsored by the San Jose
Sharks.

He mentioned there will be a Teen Dance on Friday, October 25 at the Center
and invited all to attend. Cost will be $4.00 per person and will include a
video screen. Supervisor Blondino mentioned that a Redwood City Police
Officer is in attendance at each dance.

Supervisor Blondino also invited the Commissioners to spend a day with him on
the job. He mentioned that after attending the Youth Forum last Saturday,
teens mentioned they were very interested in having a uTeen Centerll. He
suggested that perhaps the lapidary area could be relocated from the Center
and a teen center set up in that area. Because the Center was built in 1946,
it would require approximately $2.1 million just to update the facility. He
would like to see a push for a new Center as he sees it as a very important
investment in our youth.

The Commissioners all thanked Supervisor Blondino for his presentation and
for his work with the department.
