.

..
J .'

.

M/S Mortensen/Swope:

To accept the recommendations made by the Dogs in the
Parks Subcommittee (Numbers 1-4) plus the addition of
a new recommendation 15 (not advisable to open the
general areas of the parks to dogs either on or off
leash).

Management Analyst Ramon Aguilar mentioned that dog training and a dog run
area do not mix and that a physical barrier is necessary in the training
process. He said that if we are going to have a facility, there is a need to
accomodate both.

Resident Lori Nielsen said she has been going to dog obedience through the
Park and Recreation Department and felt it was very important to have an
obedience area.

Motion passed.

ITEM 5 - November Meeting Date

The Commission decided to hold its November meeting on November 27 but begin
the meeting at 6:30pm.

ITEM 6 - Park Tour

Chairperson Nordness mentioned that he spoke with Mayor LaBerge regarding the
park tour and what could be done to generate more interest. Some
possibilities mentioned were a joint evening meeting with City Council;
a presentation involving children and teens; a IIhands onn event; and
demonstrations by park staff. Information to be discussed could include Dogs
in the Parks information and the new Red Morton Recreation Center funding
proposal.

ROUNDTABLE

Superintendent Hartman advised the Commission that the bid for new play
equipment for Mezes and Spinas Parks was recently awarded to Landscape
Structures. She noted that the department had developed a new process for
getting bids from vendors. It involved each prospective vendor making a
presentation to a panel of 5 people (staff and public) who then made their
recommendation on the award of the bid. Superintendent Hartman mentioned
that it was a very successful process and the department was pleased with the
results.

M/S Swope/Mortensen: To defer the remainder of items on the agenda to the
November and adjourn the Park and Recreation meeting.

Motion passed.

The regular meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission was adjourned at
lO:15pm to be reconvened at 6:30pm on Wednesday, November 27,1991 to be held
at the Community Activities Building, 1400 Roosevelt Avenue, Redwood City,
California.

, '
